Immediately upon an FLTA's arrival, you should: - Provide IIE's Welcome Packet to the FLTA. If you have not received the Packet at least one week prior to the FLTA's arrival, please contact the FLTA program staff
- Facilitate transport to campus/housing. This can be the Supervisor's or international students' office. If pick-up cannot not be arranged, explicit instructions for getting to housing/campus must be provided to help the student begin with a good experience
- Make your school's telephone usage regulations clear to the FLTA (epecially with regard to long-distance and overseas usage). You should monitor their usage and report and violations to IIE
- Assure that the FLTA is taking the required two courses per semester to guard their visa status. These courses, in addition to their TA duties, constitute their FULL-TIME NON-DEGREE J-1 STUDENT PROGRAM, as required by federal regulation. Supervisors must attest that the FLTA is taking the required number of courses at the beginning of each semester by signing the Student Report Form
- Assist the student during registration each semester. Please notify IIE of any difficulties each semester. Please notify IIE of any difficulties in this regard. If a particular course is not available, the student must register for a course that will compliment their experience and educational background
- Assure that at least one course during the year is in American Studies or language teaching pedagogy. Since there is latitude in determining what courses will meet this requirement, please contact the FLTA program staff for permission to enroll, if there is any doubt
- FLTAs are expected to perform at a satisfactory academic level. If transcripts will not be issued in audit situations, Supervisors and/or instructors should provide letters evaluating coursework and a letter grade that the student would have received in a credit situation
- Supervisors should report to IIE, as soon as possible, any behavior, activity, or poor academic or teaching performance, which may be care for concern
- Please notify FLTA program staff if an FLTA is involved in any social or other activity that may distract from successfully completing program requirements
- This is particularly true if a supervisor learns:
- that the FLTA has been married or is expecting a child
- is working in excess of 20 hours per week on campus or at another job off-campus.
IIE will NOT issue a CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION to the FLTA without proof of their successful completion of all of the above. Please remember that an institution's participation in the Fulbright FLTA Program requires that they provide a waiver of tuition and fees associated with the two-course per semester requirement. NO financial issues should be discussed with the FLTA. All billing issues should be addressed to: FLTA Program Officer Enrichment and Professional Development Institute of International Education 809 United Nations Plaza New York, NY 10017
