FUNDING

FLTAs are funded at different levels depending on the country of citizenship and the languages taught.

Fulbright Less Commonly Taught Languages (LCTLs)

The U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs provides Fulbright FLTAs in LCTLs with a monthly stipend to cover room and board, daily living expenses, round-trip travel, health insurance and enrichment activities. The amount of the monthly stipend varies by U.S. region. For information on the exact amount of funding your FLTA would receive, please contact the FLTA Program Office at IIE.

Host institutions may elect to have IIE billed directly for the cost of room and board. If this option is selected, the FLTA will receive a smaller monthly stipend to cover daily living expenses. All other benefits remain the same. For more information on the exact amount of funding your FLTA would receive under this mechanism, please contact the FLTA Program Office at IIE.

Applying to host an FLTA is competitive. Due to fiscal constraints, institutions that offer added cost-share for the more competitive languages are given extra consideration.

Special Cases

*Clarification on applications for CHINESE (Taiwan):
The U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs provides Fulbright FLTAs from Taiwan with orientation and enrichment programs as well as health insurance coverage. The Taiwanese Fulbright Commission will provide the FLTA with supplemental funding to cover round-trip international travel. Host institutions must offer room and board, a tuition and fees waiver for the required two courses per semester and a small monthly stipend of between $400 and $600 per month. Host institutions may also offer a larger monthly stipend from which the FLTA themselves pay room, board and all other expenses.
Note: Due to funding similarities, Chinese (Taiwan) is listed along with Traditional Languages in the host institution application.

*Clarification on applications for JAPANESE:
Fulbright FLTAs from Japan are provided a monthly stipend of $350, orientation and enrichment of programs as well as health insurance coverage from the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.  In addition to the tuition and fees waiver/award/arrangement for the required two courses per semester, we ask host institutions requesting a Japanese FLTA to provide free room, board and a monthly stipend of $200.

Host institutions that offer none of the additional cost-share requested will not be considered.  Host institutions that offer only a portion of the requested cost-share will be considered and additional funds may be made available to support the assistantship. Note: Due to funding similarities, Japanese is listed along with Traditional Languages in the host institution application.

*Clarification on applications for PORTUGUESE (Brazil):
Fulbright FLTAs from Brazil are provided orientation and enrichment programs as well as health insurance coverage from the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The Brazilian Fulbright Commission provides supplemental funding to cover monthly stipends and round-trip travel.

Host institutions that offer more cost share will be given special consideration.  All applications for Portuguese will be given consideration regardless of cost share offered by host institutions. Note: Due to funding similarities, Portuguese (Brazil) is listed along with LCTLs in the host institution application.
